Ever wonder what to do with your left hand when reading from a fake book?

Wednesday, July 26, 4:PM. Ethnic dance music: it’s more than just playing the notes! (and understanding Balkan meters),
Joan Grauman Morse, presenter

How can an international folk dancer instantly know that you’re playing a Swedish hambo, an Austrian Ländler, a Bavarian Schupplattler, a Russian waltz or an Irish waltz? They’re all in 3/4 time. We will learn the subtle nuances that immediately determine the dance and its country of origin. We will then move on to Bulgaria and Macedonia and learn the meters that create this hauntingly lovely dance music.

Thursday, July 27, 2:PM. Jazz basics: How to build a jazz improvisation
Nikolay Bine, presenter

This workshop has been prepared for learning the necessary fundamentals of jazz. Based on the material given during the workshop, participants will be shown a break-down of an advanced jazz improvisation. This knowledge will be used later in a little interactive session.

Helmi Harrington, presenter

Friday, July 28, 9:AM. Bellows/Bellow Control –

Saturday, July 29, 10:AM.

Part 2: Aural awareness: Have you ever wondered if there’s more to the page than meets the eye (or ear)?,
Anthony Schultz, presenter

In Part 1, Accordion Society of Australia Vice-president, Anthony Schulz will briefly present the current state of the Accordion in Australia.

In Part 2, contemporary accordionist and educator Anthony Schulz will discuss how to listen to music and transfer the experience to a deeper understanding of what it means to play ‘by ear.’ The focus of this workshop is to assist accordionists of any level to explore and develop their aural awareness through listening, and as a
result of this process, engage with repertoire with a greater sense of style, nuance and confidence.
