Announcing the 2023-24 Jack Straw Artist Support Program Artists: Jack Straw Cultural Center is pleased to announce their resident artists for the 30th year of the Artist Support Program. 2023 Artist Support Program residencies were awarded to 18 artists and artist teams spanning multiple disciplines and genres. Eight artists/teams were awarded 20 hours of recording and production time with an engineer in our studio. Ten additional artists/teams will receive matching awards. All artists are provided with training, events, and other opportunities as part of their residencies.
A traditional Forró ensemble features accordion, triangle and Drums. Foleada is a sextet featuring two accordionists: Jamie Maschler and Gabe Hall-Rodrigues, two percussionists: Jeff Busch and Sam Esecson, Michael Catts on bass, and Brazilian vocalist Adriana Giordano. All our members are active in the Seattle music scene and are veteran performers.Foleada partners with @ForroinSeattle to host regular dance events for the Brazilian and Forró community. Their largest cultural event Festa Junina draws 400+ people.
Excerpts from their website: Foleada is a Seattle-based Forró band with a focus on Pé de Serra style. Forró is the heartbeat of Northeast Brazil and it draws on many musical styles, from Afro-Brazilian music like samba and baião to European polkas. On the other hand, Forró dance borrows from Cuban salsa and Samba de Gafieira, a Brazilian ballroom dance. In other words, it’s a partner dance and it’s a lot of fun!
Look for Foleada’s new album Summer 2023!
