Taras Luka is a Ukrainian jazz and classic accordionist, music director and composer of theatre and film music. He graduated from the Odesa National Music Academy (Ukraine) and received a master’s degree in music. In 2024 Taras moved to Vancouver (Canada) where he actively continues his musical career. He has composed original music for the accordion and more. The last of the works is a jazz album for accordion and jazz quintet called “Part of the Journey”, which was released in 2023.
In 2024 “Part of the Journey” was presented at Vancouver International Jazz Festival. He also worked as a composer, conductor and music director theater for several years. One of his last works was “Choral of Freedom” for symphony orchestra, choir and soprano solo (dedicated to all the children who died as a result of the war in Ukraine). The world premiere took place in Bologna in Teatro Comunale de Bologna.
Taras composed the music for a new production musical “Romeo & Juliet”, “Carmen” which was selected for the LONGLIST of the “Grammy Awards” (Theatre Oscar) and received very positive reviews from theater critics in Ukraine. Over the past few years he has written music for two musicals, one sound design and cabaret performance for theatre.
The piece has been selected for the “Hugh Davidson Composer Readings 2024” (Victoria Symphony Orchestra) Canada. In 2024 He toured across Canada with the band and theatre cities including Vancouver, Yukon.
For the remaining two years of residence in Vancouver, he wrote music for two short films that were shown on the Vancouver Film Festival.
“Part of the Journey” is a romantic-sounding album with a rhythm instrument quintet and no horns. It combines a triad of accessible 1970s jazz-fusion like Chick Corea / Return to Forever, melodies that have a folksy embrace, and latin rhythms.
