Music Monday in Canada

Monday, May 6, 2019 was the 15th anniversary of Music Monday! Music Monday is a national event that takes place on the first Monday in May every year. All across Canada, students and citizens play and sing at 12:PM in support of music education.The event at the BC Legislature was one of many taking place in British Columbia, with schools and community organizations also marking this special day with celebratory concerts and musical events.

Monday, May 6, WAD, was celebrated as Music Monday across Canada. At 12:PM across the country, thousands of students were singing and performing concerts to support the important of Music Education.In Victoria, British Columbia, Canada

The provincial capital celebration included (in photo) accordionists O. Scott and Jade Wong (students of Jelena Milojevic). O.Scott, World Accordion Trophy 2018 prize winner in Variete category and Jade Wong, 1st place winner of International Open Trophy 2018. Both won prizes at the Victoria Performing Arts Festival. The accordionists served as co-celebrators and performers who helped share the awareness of World Accordion Day. Also performing were 250 singers and the Oak Bay Secondary Jazz Band. Joining the celebration was the Premier of BC, John Horgan and the Ministers of Education and Arts and Culture. The event was conducted by conductor and accordionist, Dr. Adam Jonathan from the University of Victoria.

Kelly Peterson (wife of late famous Canadian Jazz musician, Oscar Peterson)

The event is organized the BC Coalition for Music Education. This is important organization works to promote music education in the province.

The guest conductor was Dr. Adam Jonathan Con. Head of Music Education at the University of Victoria, director of the Symphonic Chorus, and student of Jelena Milojevic. He was facilities coordinator for the BC Accordion Festival in July 2016, and served as facilities coordinator for Trophee Mondial and World Accordion and Tango Festival in 2018. As guest conductor, he felt it was time and appropriate to include accordion as part of the celebration of both World Accordion Day and Music Monday.
