Concert accordionist Geir Draugsvoll, Professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Music, will make the US premiere of Sofia Gubaidulina’s accordion concerto “Fachwerk” with the Berkeley Symphony on December 3, 2015.
Hear Geir performing this concerto written especially for accordion by one of the world’s most esteemed living composers. Fachwerk (2009) was written by Gubaidulina for accordion, percussion and string orchestra.
The Fachwerk concerto is also available on CD performed by Friedrich Lips, available online at catalog: CD027

Geir Draugsvoll is considered to be one of the important musicians promoting classical accordion. The last decade, he has caused headlines like “Breaking Borders”, “Breathtaking”, “Masterful” and “Musical Sensation”. With a repertoire ranging from Bach, Mozart, Grieg and Stravinsky to contemporary classics like Gubaidulina, Hosokawa, Berio, Nørgaard and Piazzolla, he has performed all over Europe, and also toured China and Japan. Born in 1967, Geir Draugsvoll is Norwegian, but now lives in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Sofia Gubaidulina is famous for unusually orchestrated compositions encompassing themes of mystical spiritualism,electronic music and heavy percussion. She was born in Chistopol in the Tatar Republic of the Soviet Union in 1931.After instruction in piano and composition at the Kazan Conservatory, she studied composition with Nikolai Peiko atthe Moscow Conservatory, pursuing graduate studies thereunder Vissarion Shebalin. Until 1992, she lived in Moscow. Since then, she has made her primary residence in Germany,outside Hamburg.
