William K. Fox, a student of Sam Falcetti, recently played his Roland accordion at the request of the family at an Irish funeral outside in the town cemetery in the village of Cataumet on Cape Cod, Massachusetts in February 2021. The family especially requested the well-known Irish song, “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling”, because that tune was a particular favorite of the deceased. Mr. Fox took the occasion to utilize a thumb drive provided by Sam Falcetti that included a recording of “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling” and he played back-up to the excellent recording that provided both music and lyrics.
The funeral service and the music presented by Mr. Fox were “live” streamed via smartphone to 35 relatives of the family in Ireland. He also played some additional well-known Irish tunes, such as “Irish Lullaby”, “The Wearing of the Green”, “Danny Boy”, “I’ll Take You Home Again, Kathleen” and “My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean.”
According to one of the family members at the funeral, a family relative watching remotely in Ireland wept openly during the playing of “My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean” and said it was her favorite tune.
