We begin with two of Brahms’ Hungarian Dances (Nos. 1 & 5), followed by the title track, written for us by Montreal-based composer Airat Ichmouratov, and generously commissioned with funds from the University of Alberta.
For the next tracks, Smetana’s “Die Moldau” and Chopin’s “Mazurka in Bb major,” you may be surprised to hear me playing on piano instead, a rare event! We turn up heat with Lutosławski’s “Five Dance Preludes”, one of my favorite pieces to perform, and finish with a wild and furiously fast rendition of Brahms’ “Rondo all Zingarese”.
In other news, I’m writing to you from Victoria, BC, where I’m spending a week at UVic playing concerts on Vancouver Island, working with a few students, and practicing new repertoire with my duo. Coming up next, I am looking forward to tour of Atlantic Canada in March with Ladom Ensemble, with concerts in Moncton, Halifax, Mahone Bay, Antigonish, Pictou, and a hop over to Labrador for a show in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.
