Eric Vloeimans and Will Holshouser

Frank McBride shares, “My brother-in-law-in-law, versatile accordionist, Will Holshouser, will be teaming up with Dutch trumpeter Eric Vloiemans for a performance at Memphis Brooks Museum of Art on Thursday, September 12, 2024 from 6-8 PM. Will has performed in over 30 countries with leading jazz, world, pop, and classical artists. In addition to coaxing an eclectic mix of musical traditions out of his instrument, Will teaches at Brooklyn College and provides invaluable guidance for finding the best pizza and ethnic restaurants in Brooklyn.

Eric is recognized as one of the best jazz trumpeters in Europe, winning six Edison Awards (the Dutch equivalent of a Grammy). While Eric’s sartorial choices are indeed colorful, his mastery of the trumpet is even more colorful. I hope some of you can get out to Brooks to hear a great musical “conversation” between two exceptionally talented virtuosos.

The video clip is “Deep Gap,” Will’s tribute to the folk musician Doc Watson. Like Watson, Will’s roots are in western North Carolina and this piece beautifully captures that region’s musical traditions.”

Will Holshouser (accordion) is a veteran of the New York music scene who has performed all over the world with artists including violinist Regina Carter, clarinetist David Krakauer, and improvisers Han Bennink & Michael Moore as well as with his own projects. He has also performed with Antony & the Johnsons, Kiran Ahluwalia, Uri Caine, Guy Klucevsek, New York City Ballet, New York City Opera, Martha Wainwright, Loudon Wainwright, Suzanne Vega, and others. Will studied accordion and composition with his mentor Dr. William Schimmel, and composition with Tania León, Dalit Warshaw, Anthony Braxton, and Bill Barron. He lives in Brooklyn, NY with his family and teaches at Brooklyn College.

Eric Vloeimans (trumpet) is one of the best-known musicians in his native country, the Netherlands. He has led a wide variety of ensembles over the years and is a frequent guest soloist with bands andorchestras of all kinds. He has won four Edison prizes (the “Dutch Grammy”) for his recordings and has toured throughout Europe, Asia and the US with his own groups and artists such as Mercer Ellington, John Taylor, Peter Erskine, The Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, Wayne Horvitz, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and many others.
