This concert traces a musical journey from the Baroque era to contemporary times, showcasing the accordion’s remarkable versatility. Beginning with solo works and expanding to the dynamic interplay of two accordions, the program explores the instrument’s orchestral depth and tonal diversity. A highlight of the morning is the duo accordion arrangement of Petrushka, offering a fresh perspective on Stravinsky’s iconic work.
Hanzhi earned her Bachelor’s degree at the China Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. She completed her Master’s degree and Soloist Diploma at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen with the renowned accordion professor Geir Draugsvoll, where she also served as an assistant teacher at the Academy.

Hanzhi has performed recitals at UC Santa Barbara’s Lively Arts, Stanford Live, Bravo! Vail, Krannert Center, and Candlelight Concert Society. Upcoming recitals include the Artist Series Concerts of Sarasota and a concert with YCA saxophonist, Steven Banks, at The Morgan Library & Museum in New York City. Hanzhi has appeared as soloist with the Oregon Music Festival, Victoria Symphony, Cantori, Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle, Sinfonia Gulf Coast, Iris Orchestra, and with the Hawaii Symphony, Erie Philharmonic, and Reno Chamber Orchestra. Ivan Filipchyk is a New York-based artist and musician. He graduated from the Russian Gnessin Academy of Music in Moscow with a Master’s degree in music. He acquired his musical foundation in Belarus and Russia, countries with rich musical history, traditions, and well-established education in music and arts. As a musician (accordion, piano) he participated in various competitions and gave concerts performing (as a soloist and participant in an ensemble) on the stages of Russia, Japan, USA, and Canada. GatherNYC, a revolutionary concert experience founded in 2018 by cellist Laura Metcalf and guitarist Rupert Boyd, launches its expanded 2025-2026 season at the series’ home venue, Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) (2 Columbus Circle). For the first time, GatherNYC will offer weekly concerts, held every Sunday morning at 11am, in The Theater at MAD. Coffee and pastries are served before each performance at 10:30am. Admission for children under 12 is free.
