Passing of John Simkus (July 13, 1937 – April 6, 2026)

AWW sadly reports that John Simkus, age 88, passed away on April 6, 2026. He was born in Chicago, Illinois, to John and Anna (Neniskis) Simkus. As a young boy, he moved to Hillside, Illinois, where he later graduated from Proviso High School.

He began studying the accordion at the age of five and developed a lifelong passion for music. Throughout his life, he remained deeply dedicated to the instrument, performing regularly and bringing music to countless events, gatherings, and audiences.

Simkus frequently collaborated and performed with internationally known accordionist Stas Venglevski. Their appearances included concerts, accordion club events, and workshops in the Midwest.

    you may occasionally find performances where Simkus participated or was part of the same concert circuit.

John served in the United States Army Reserves beginning in 1958. During his service, his musical abilities were often called upon, and he performed at military functions.

Professionally, he worked as a toolmaker before founding his own business, Simco Plastics, Inc., an injection molding company.

On the personal side, John married Mary Ann (Govaker) in 1963, and together they raised a family. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, known for his warmth and generosity. He lived in several Illinois communities including Hillside, Hanover Park, and Elgin.

Music remained central throughout his life. He was active in accordion organizations, performed widely, and became known particularly for his jazz accordion playing. He also served as a church musician for many years, contributing regularly to worship services.

His love for the accordion kept him active during the week-ends performing with many groups for all types of occasions.

Stas and John performed extensively across the U.S. and Europe and even released recordings together.
